2003: THE BREAKOUT YEAR?

To answer that question we must first review the progress Price Racing has accomplished since our last update, almost a year ago. We hope time will allow us to update our pages more frequently in 2003!

The first major change in 2002 was the move of Todd Estal into the driver's seat of the "Hired Gun" Nova. Steve Von Ehrenkrook, the original Hired Gun of Price Racing foresaw that he was not going to be able to race the Hired Gun Nova on a regular basis because of family commitments and his work schedule in 2002. Todd was in the process of building his ART 34 Chevy Roadster and financial restraints were slowing the progress on that project so Guy Price asked Todd if he might be interested in "wheeling" the Hired Gun Nova and he emphatically answered: "Yes!"

After spending a lot of time attempting to get the Hired Gun Nova to hook up Todd was able to make chassis adjustments which have paid dividends as 2002 came to a close (more on this later). Other input Todd has provided to make the Hired Gun a threat each time he pulls it to the line is his knowledge and ability to refine the fuel delivery process on the Ron's Flying Toilet fuel injection system which sets atop the 359 c.i. small block.

Through the use of a leakdown tester Todd was able to set the barrel valve to attain maximum performance while also making the car more economical to run using just over 1.5 gallons of alcohol per pass. Seat time makes for a more consistent race vehicle and by the end of the season Todd was showing that he will be a big threat while representing Price Racing again in 2003! He won the bonus race at Southwestern International Raceway's Super Chevy event and went to the final four in the Pro (electronics) class the next day.

Price Racing's "old man", Guy Price, continued his consistency threat throughout the year in his Priceless One Again Camaro and picking up his first ever Team points race win at Firebird International Raceway. He made several rounds in the team races and ended the year in the number 5 position at the end of the year in the points standings. The same was true at Southwestern International Raceway in Tucson where, despite missing the final two races of the year, Guy was able to end up in 10th position a that track as well.

"The big highlight of the year for the "Priceless One Again" Camaro and the "Priceless Too" Camaro driven by daughter Jami was the double win we had at the Pro Nitro Event at Firebird," Guy says. Guy won the electronics class and Jami took home the bigger purse with her win the non-electronics class. Look for lower ET's and more mph out of the Priceless One Again Camaro in 2003 as more cube inches are being added to the gas powered small block over the winter to hopefully push horsepower well into the 600 range and low 10 second elapsed times.

Jami, in her Priceless Too Camaro had what might be called an "off year" for her as she was not able to participate as much as in the past due to family commitments and time spent helping daughter Kayla get adjusted to bracket racing in here Desert Angel Junior Dragster.

Kayla is looking forward to 2003 to becoming a real threat with her new Raptor III motor installed and running well at the end of 2002. "The Raptor III is extremely consistent compared to the prior alcohol motor," says Kayla's "new dad" and crew chief, Joe Neu. He adopted Jami's daughter from a prior marriage in 2002. In testing the car ran 11.70's consistently at 55 mph. Efforts now will be directed at slowing the car to 12.90 or slower ET's as required for 9 year olds.

ODDS & ENDS

During 2002 Price Racing became more involved with www.dragraceresults.com even more by participating in all of the Desert Class races and is looking forward to participating to the fullest in 2003.

"We hope to become better acquainted with our family of DRR friends" says Guy Price, "and become more familiar with others from across the country while adding them and their race vehicles to our 'DRR Clan' photo page." Take a look at the Clan page for photos of Price Racing friends and DRR racers elsewhere on the website.

Special Report - ET Bracket Racing Guideline Proposals
Added December 11, 2001

CLOSING OUT THE YEAR 2001!
Most of the Price Racing Clan has made about all , if not all, the laps they will be making in the year 2001!   Most of us, except for the Hired Gun, Coad Red and Slopoke made the trek  back to Las Vegas, NV for the Division 7 ET  Finals where more than 860 cars participated in what is probably the largest ET Finals competition in the country!  And probably as tough as any around the country also.

About the time you think you got everything figured out, something slips in and shakes it up!  Pricless One Again was killing the tree during time trials on Friday and on Saturday that just got worse and even more so in eliminations  on Sunday!   He won two rounds with some of the worst lights he's cut in years, one being a .758 light and was still able to take the win light and his competition didn't red light either!

Ken Perdue and his ride, "Maybelline" fell in love with Las Vegas all over again at the ET Finals.  He went all the way to the semi-finals again for the second straight race at Las Vegas and wouldn't a done that if he hadn't forgot where he put the brake pedal!  His semi-final competition went on to take the crown and represented Division 7 at the World Finals in Pomona!  All Ken could do after that loss was count the $750 he got for making it that far while Guy Price bought gas for the ride home with the $50 he won after his third round loss!

Jami Neu found a lot of her friends from other tracks the night before eliminations and the late night must have caught up with her on Sunday morning as she was late on the tree the very first round.  Said something about her "head felt heavy" with her helmet on that morning!  So when Super Chevy rolled around a few weeks later at Tucson she made sure she got a good night's sleep before eliminations the next day and came out with "kill" written all over her posting some lights us "box" boys would loved to have had in eliminations including a .509 and two .503's!  She went down to the final six cars before running under her number a "hair" more than here competition in the quarter finals!  You can bet she will be fired up for 2002 though!

Guy Price and Ken Perdue made a few rounds at Super Chevy but not enough to get in the money, one round away for both.  Guy was again having trouble cutting a decent light but went to a test 'n tune at Firebird the following Saturday and made some adjustments that brought his lights back in line.  These adjustments included raising slick tire pressure to 8 pounds from 6-1/2 pounds and a couple of turns softer on the coil-over shocks. It became apparent from photos taken at Super Chevy that the slicks were wrinkling pretty bad and that was contributing to late lights.  The reason for the excess wrinkling was attributed to the cooler weather and as result the little small block was providing more torque.

"We are ecstatic about all the new found friends we have made this year through our involvment in www/dragracersults.com, " says Guy Price.  "And we are looking forward to adding more drr friends during the coming year", he adds.   "And, since we probably won't see many of you till next year we want to wish you and yours a very Merry Chistmas and a very prosperous New Years, as long as it is not at our expense!  God Bless each and everyone of you, your families and your friends!  To paraphrase Will Rogers: 'I have never met a racer I didn't like' !"  See you all in 2002!

PREVIOUS UPDATE: 2001 -HEADING FOR THE FINALS!

Finally, after about 9 months we are making some headway in getting this website up and on its feet once again! In the next few weeks you will find more and more new things on here and check back frequently as my webmaster and son, Scott Price is attempting to "teach an old dog" new tricks so that I can add photos and update this page from time to time!

This year certainly has been better than 2000!  Haven't crashed a car this year.  In fact, the Priceless One Again Camaro seems to get more conistent and reliable with every pass.  The addition of an Exhaust Gas Temperature meter in the vehicle has helped in accomplishing this consistentcy as has the Crew-Chief Pro prediction program I use to predict elapsed times!  Going to a larger tire (32 x 14.5 Eagles) and 5.14 gear has resulted in very consistent 60' times while reducing trap rpm's.

Two-thirds of the Price Racing Team just recently participated in the B&M / Ron's Fuel Injection big bucks race at "The Strip" at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  Guy and Jami both participated, Guy in the electronics class and Jami in the footbrake class.  Minor problems continued to plague Jami as the posi-tract unit become tired at this event and she lost some of her consistency as a result.  Governor problems in the tranny caused problems in the last couple of team races for her.  Guy was able to make three rounds in the $10,000 to win race without having to buy back.  In the third round I had to foot brake as my tranny brake button failed to function and it has been several years since I footbraked and was surprised that in that short instance I could switch over and still cut a
light in the 5's!  But because i could not stall up enough I was not able to run my number.  New clutches in Jami's posi-unit and a new button for may tranny brake should make us both competitive at the upcoming et finals where I will be running in Pro for Team Firebird and Jami will be participating in Street class.  At this writing we still do not know where we ended up in the points but believe Guy was sixth in Pro and Jami eighth in Street.

During this year we have become involved with what we believe is one of the finest websites for bracket racing information on the world wide web, www.dragraceresults.com.  Both Jami and I spend considerable time on this site visiting with racers all over the country and feel we can really call them part of our family.  We will be aquainting you with some of these folks from time to time.  We will even be showing pictures of some of these racers and their rides from time to time.  Through the chat line on drr we have met many very dear friends that we have never seen in person but joke with as if we had known them all our lives including the drr webmaster Tamela Hayes and drr moderator Danny Sons.  Our gang of regulars include: WhyAValiant, Motorvation, Mopower, Cuda-Racer, Tom396, Crisco, jwhrace, DEracebabe, Kristi, 10.90 streetcar, HAMMER, r729, and our own local racers including Comp, Shadow, hotrodjunkie, and tacklebox racer.  I am sure I left some out but will add their names in future updates when my memory comes back.

Speaking of hotrodjunkie, he is a Price Racing Clan Member, Ken Perdue who also made the trek to Las Vegas for the big bucks race and at the Saturday race where the winner pocketed $5,000, Ken was able to make it to the semi-finals and pick up $500 without having to pull a slot machine handle!

But what about the "Hired Gun" you asked?  This has been a true "down" year for him.  He has been trying to get the Hired Gun Nova back on track after having some real serious fuel contamination problems and some problems with getting the car to launch like it should.  He, Steve Von Ehrenkrook, is still working on getting these problems solved but it is doubtful that he will be participating in the ET finals because of these problems.

Other clan members Phil Coad and Jim Hileman have been participating in Super Street events throughout the year and will be attending the Division 7 race in Las Vegas in November.  Todd Estal, while building his roadster, continues to run his purple Camaro with a small block ZZ4 engine in it and is also driving one of Jerry Denton's roadsters at some events, but because of employement committments will be unable to attend the et finals.

The next big get together for all Chevy powered Price Racing Clan members will be the new Super Chevy Show in Tucson in November.  Until the next update comes along, keep the sunny side up and win a lot.  Remember, "The Price is Right, sometimes!"
